Three on a Thursday #2

Second week into this little experiment and, as the abuse hasn’t been too severe, I thought I’d go rummaging again to see what I could find for you lot this time. Please find enclosed three more prime cuts that are new to me, and maybe to you as well.

If you like what you hear, pop and see guesting with DJ Vallee, from Bristol’s Finest Funkateers, Funk from the Trunk, smashing it up at Mr Wolf’s from very late this Saturday to the early hours of Sunday morning, where the flyer says we’ll be serving you “good old-fashioned funk & soul, classic hip-hop, and all those funky party breaks & mash-ups that keep the party rolling” – best leave the Perry Como at home then …

Right, pimping over, on to the tunes!

First up is Relative Funk Soundsystem / Whoo Ha, Got The Groove In Check, another funky as hell, sample laden mash-up from Canada’s S-Man and DJ Phaze. Take vocals from Brand Nubian, Busta Rhymes and The Beastie Boys and then slather them all over Bobby Thurston’s 80’s Disco Funk tune ‘Check Out The Groove’ , bake, and then serve to the dancefloor. Guaranteed to get them wanting a second helping.

Next is up is one of the tracks included in the DJ Shadow Remixed Fan project released a couple of years back . The deal seems to have been “remix a DJ Shadow track, he’ll select his favourites and they’ll be bundled up and made available for free download“. I think my favourite of the 20 or so tracks is the Walkie Talkie (Irn Mnky Beat Down Mix)

There’s just something about the shuddering bassline that has been grafted onto one of my favourite tracks from his The Private Press album that I love, skittering along under the original tune and definitely asking to be played on a big system.

Finally comes Ewan Hoozami / Spaced Out, a glitchy, synthy, Mr Oizo-esque MPC workout from the rising Bristolian production star. Covered in lashings of classic 50’s SciFi samples – I’m fairly certain I recognise some bits from H.G Wells’ War of the Worlds and the much underrated Dark Star – this is right little grower of a tune. What’s even nicer, if you go to his website, he’ll even let you download it for free!
