Unlucky for some … but not for you as I’ve got a sack of excellent tunes for you to have a listen to!
If you like what you hear pop down to Bocabar in Bristol this Friday to hear me play a few tunes(yes, I’m playing south of the river – I’ve got my jabs and have packed my passport, so they’ll let me back over the bridge). I’m on from 9-1am, so pop down and dance off some of the Bank Holiday booze.
First up is a remix from a buddy of mine, the awesomely talented Mr Benn, giving the good ole boom bap treatment to a summery number from Joe Driscoll.
If you get chance this lad is well worth seeing live – I was at The Croft being highly impressed whilst watching him do his ‘sampling myself beatboxing and playing a tambourine, then rapping and playing the guitar over it’ style thing whilst it was all kicking off outside. If I was distracted enough to ignore that kind of shenanigans, imagine how good this tune is!
Word is there’s a DJ Moneyshot version in the offing as well…
Next is a mellow little swinging number from Dedy Dread (him of the M.I.A. mashup that came out the other year) lifting Louis Armstrong ‘s version of the old jazz standard ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing‘, banging a sweet little beat behind it and letting the tune do the talking … summer niceness.
Finally a lovely funk number from Jayl Funk called Piece of Mine. From the wahwah funk guitar intro to the horn line to the drum break this is a classic Nu Funk burner, and one that I can see taking residence in my record bag for a while to come … even better it’s a free download from his Soundcloud page.
Right that’s your lot for this week, see you next time!
