I’m liking this paternity leave thing, despite the broken sleep and nappy changing, it’s given me plenty of time for tune rummaging. Still hasn’t stopped my prevaricating and posting this at almost 9pm – ah well. Still I hope the tunes are worth it!
Mr Bird & Dedy Dread turn up in this series like bad pennies, and their tune Tightening Up is a damn good reason to give the boys from Lisbon another outing. The drums on this funky little number are truly sublime and Jazzy Gentle‘s sax line is a corker. I defy you to sit still whilst listening to this one …
Next up is a belting tune straight out of that hotbed of reggae sound … erm, Antwerp, Belgium (I thought the Belgians just did Tin-Tin and put mayo on their chips …)but the Turntable Dubbers have done some lovely stuff before, which I’ve rinsed quite hard on the show, and their follow up, Passin’ Witness (One Life Riddim), raises it another notch, skilfully blending Marvin Gaye, The Pharcyde and J-Star, with a seriously wobbly bottom end. Even better, it’s free to download
Last up is a straight up and down hip-hop belter, from Japan’s DJ Mitsu The Beats. I first picked up on this chap’s work due to the digging skills of my fellow Purple Radio jock, Marky De Sade, who went through a period of playing a lot of his cuts. This particular effort , Pursuit of Clarity was brought to my attention by the rather fabulous Hip Hop Chip Shop, and it’s fantastic.
