Three on a Thursday #27

Almost managed to be late on another one of these – I sat down to start my scribbling after the Charlotte had been put to bed and her mother went out – cue 3 hrs of screaming. I swear if her head had started rotating through 360° I wouldn’t have been surprised. She’s finally asleep, so I can get on it.

Anyway, number 27 ‘eh – lets hope the Three on a Thursday series isn’t going to OD or choke on vomit in it’s sleep.

Too soon?

Ah well, onto the tunes …

First up is a but of an oldie given how modern sounding it is, it sounds like it’s a week old, not over a year old. I’ve been rinsing Opiuo‘s brilliant Ray Charles tweak Good Thymes, but hadn’t heard Off Chops till this months installment of the Nextmen‘s podcast (and if you don’t subscribe to it you really should). Spades of burbling bass like this bring me deep joy.

Number two this week is from rapidly rising hip-hop beatmaker and mashup wunderkind Gramatik. First heard of this fella on the Cold Busted sampler, and only recently has chance to chase up some more of his tunes. Those of you who listened into the show on Tuesday will recognise my current favourite of the bunch so far, which is this thoroughly cheeky little mash of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven.

Last up this week is a wonderful little slice of downtempo mellowness form that master of the mash-up – Jimi Needles. I’ve featured a couple of his reworks before, and they’ve without exception been brilliant (if slightly deranged). His latest offering is no different, taking Daft Punk’s Something About Us and expertly slicing DJ Fresh’s Gold Dust into it, giving us Something About Gold Dust (Jimi Needles Blend). Late night bidness …

Obsessive music nerd for since his formative years, Sherlock Ohms finally pulled his finger out and started inflicting his collection of Funk, Soul, Hip-hop, Reggae, Breaks, Beats and random ephemera on the unwitting public in mid-2008. Since then he's graced the airwaves of Big Chill FM and Purple Radio, the stages of the Festinho festival, and the DJ booths of the UK fluffing for the likes of DJ Moneyshot, Boca 45 and Ugly Duckling. Whether it's early morning chilled wig outs, or eclectic party starting beat fests there's a reason they call him 'No Shit Sherlock' View all posts by djsherlockohms
