Yes it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for all week – it’s Three on a Thursday time!
Compiling the tunes this week has been a bit of a different one for me – sometimes it feel like I’m desperately trying to find three tracks to recommend, but I’ve been drowned in a glut of them recently. From the promo reviews I’ve dropped from Cast-a-Blast and Hero Records, to new bits and bobs from Smoove, Audited Beats, Kraak& Smaak and Four Tet, I’ve been spoiled with new stuff, some of which didn’t quite make the cut.
So what did?
Read on and find out!
Had a random email out of the blue on Monday from the boss of GED Soul Records, straight out of the funk heartlands of … well, Tennessee, but nevermind. I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn’t vitriolic abuse, or a warning to stop hiding in the bushes outside his house, but instead a pointer to some quite tidy soul and funk goodness, with nary a gap toothed banjo strumming yokel in sight.
One of my favourites was this little number from the label house band DeRobert & The Half Truths called Reachin’ Out – Serious soul, and available from their Bandcamp page.
Next up is a 100% full bore hip-hop party stomper from DJ Vapor. Acapellas from Large Pro’s Harcore Hip-Hop and Hot Sizzlin’ Torchin’ Blazin’ end up mashed with Bad Monkey’s No 1 Fan (Basement Freaks Remix), for a serious funky effort by the name of Hardcore Fan If you manage to stay still when listening to the this one, I fear you may be clinically dead.
Finally is a bit of a blast from the past for me. I’ve been a fan of Jon Carter and his Monkey Mafia alter-ego since I went to the launch party for the 15 Steps E.P. when I was at Uni many many moons, and now after a long layoff, the wee man is back!
There are a fair few tracks and booties over on his soundcloud, but my favourite has to be Stevie Drop. Twisting the main hook from Stevie Wonder’s Superstition over a bouncing monster of a Diplo-ish beat full of claps & hand drums slaps with some trademark Dancehall chat topping it off. This should go down rather nicely on a dancefloor methinks.
