Ghetto Funk have just dropped the second volume of their seminal ‘Icons Remixed’ series!
I think I’m so excited a little bit of wee came out.
The release of the original ‘Icons’ album was what broke the Ghetto Funk sound for me, and tracks from it, such as Parker’s remix of Aretha Franklin classic Rock Steady and The Captain’s take on The Beatles The Word still regularly crop up in my live sets
Almost a year to the day since the first one, we’ve been blessed with another one. From a *very* quick listen, the following few jump straight out at me:
Ray Charles seems to be a flavour of the month at the mo, with the epic remix that Opiuo did a while back, and this could well become similarly legendary. Bobby C TV Sound (who seems to be able to do no wrong at the moment) has done wonderful things to What I’d Say
I’ve heard a number of boots of this one in the past but never quite as brilliant as what Kiwi Funkateer Funk Ferret and Goodgroove. A scratchtacular blend of the original Glenn Miller track with beats, wobbles and a Beastie Boys sample. What’s not to like?
The original of De La Soul & Chaka Khan‘s All Good is a slightly Guilty Pleasure of mine, so its nice to see the deft touch of The Breakbeat Junkie at the helm for this one. A little touch of bass, a few crisp drums and we’re there. Nice
Last up is a thorough reworking (thank fook!) of the harmonising be-bubblepermed cheesefest that is Hall & Oates You Make My Dreams Come True. DJ Wood does the seemingly impossible and turns it into something more than listenable. Amazing what a breakbeat can do innit?
A thorough road testing will be taking place alongside DJ Vallee at Mr Wolfs tonight, so I’ll report back later.
