Three on a Thursday #172

Back to some sort of regularity!

(OK, a day late due to different version of being on different laptops, but hey, two in two weeks right?)

Seems like DJ Yoda has grown up a little from his hyperactive cut ‘n’ paste days (fun though they were). The all-new tartrazine and sugar free beatsmith dropped his new album, Home Cooking, on 12th April, and it’s far more song-centric than his previous efforts, with a stellar cast of collaborators, including Andrew Ashong, the Jungle Brothers and Eva Lazarus.

It’s quality throughout, but the track that popped after the first couple of listens was Thornton Heath featuring Omar, a lovely little neo-soul bubbler, with a very Kid Koala-esque scratch trumpet line.

Track 2 comes courtesy of Italian DJ, producer and crate digger, Woxow,
who has bought us Chaos, somehow managing to cajole rocksteady legend Ken Boothe, J5’s Akil and Blurum13 onto the same reggae drenched beat, which has then been ably flipped by DJ Maars. Lovely, and the B-side by Smile Davis ain’t bad either.

Last up this week is Get a Hold On This from self-declared “Plymouth’s 14th best DJ”, Aldo Vanucci, and what a neo-northern soul banger it is.

Big bass guitar line, stomping, shuffling drums and Kylie Auldist sounding like all of the The Supremes all rolled into one antipodean soul diva, this is a proper dancefloor belter.

Cracking remixes from The Allergies and Dr Rubberfunk on the flip as well …

After a forthnight, I  think I’ve finally caught up on sleep, though I think it might be a few weeks before I finally manage to completely deglitter myself – Shambala ’17, you were epic. It really reminded me of my old Big Chill days, but with an even more eclectic musical lineup and stronger ‘fringe’ of events. I can see me and mine coming back next year.

Right, tunes.

SNAFU Principle, or WTF Is Going On?

poster-1(This is a bit of an odd post  for me, something between a Three on a Thursday, a Mixtape Madness, a review and some random internet sleuthing … take from it what you will…)

There’s been a resurgence of interest in interest in the Situationist Art Project,  chart music saboteurs and all round absurdists known sometimes as the KLF ever since the above poster turned up earlier this year hinting at their return.

For those not obsessed with the random meanderings of late 80’s/early 90’s arthouse electronic noise terrorists, I’ll explain.

Currently lazing around in Cornwall, drinking amazing beer and messing around on the beach – yet I’ve still managed to find a little time to dig for tunes. Aren’t I good to you?

Whomp.

This Saturday.

Gig Updates

Just a quick update on September’s gigs, I’ll be back with those lovely lovely lads at WHOMP on the 29th at Basement 45 giving it the beans in Room 2 alongside the beats and breaks boys, whilst Room 1 gets all chunky house.

If you can’t wait that long, I’m giving it the super-sub treatment for one of Bristol’s finest, Ewan Hoozami, at Mr Wolfs on Saturday night, from midnight.

Do pop down, there’s a love.

Brisfest 2012 lineup announced!

Back in the mists of time there was a ‘Community Festival‘ up at Ashton Court in Bristol – over the years it grew from a few mates in a field into one of the largest free festivals in Europe, with all the public nudity and dogs on strings that that brings.

Eventually the two enemies of fun, Licensing Law and ‘Elf and Safety, demanded such niceties as ‘insurance’ and ‘a fence to keep the troublemakers out’ which drove costs up and despite sponsorship from Orange, the debts piled up. Sadly, a washout in 2007 was the final nail in its coffin and the good times rolled no more.

Like a phoenix from the ashes, a couple of good eggs filled our festival shaped hole with Brisfest –  a couple of days of mental music and good times, held at venues all over the city. It did well – so well, in fact, that they’re stepping up their game and taking the festival out of the city into the fields again.

If this alone doesn’t tempt you, they’ve just announced their lineup today. Oh yes.

Tickets are available here. I’d suggest you get on it.

Three on a Thursday #64

Another swing, another miss … apologies for the tardiness, it was my little girl’s 1st birthday yesterday (Happy Birthday Charlotte!) so I was utterly exhausted after chasing around a room full of ~1 years olds.

Meh, enough with the excuses, on with the music.
