Booty Fruit / Proper Produce Volume 2

Everyone loves a good mashup don’t they? Taking a well known track, spinning it on it’s head and watching the dancefloors reaction of “ooh, I know thi … wait a minute” before going mental is a great laugh.

It’s also somewhat of a  speciality of the Booty Fruit boys and girls and they’ve done the business again on Proper Produce Volume 2.

heir

Leading from the front , the EP opens with label boss Hidden Riddim and his compadre El Bomba’s track, Dr Fluteski. Taking a chopped and screwed flute loop from the Beastie Boys laid over a snapping snare, this will surely set your head nodding.

Next up Bristol boys, The Allergies, take it to a mellow place, reflipping Blueboys Remember Me, adding some Grace Jones and a soupcon of Dennis Edwards to give you Remember. I love the cheeky little Eric B & Rakim sample from Paid in Full on the outro.

On Where’s Me Washboard, Hong Kong Ping Pong show their love of both kinds of music, Country *and* Western when they go digging for samples. Featuring a full-bore gap-toothed yokel style ‘harmonicky solo’ over one of Kernows biggest recent exports – Bass.

The prolific DJ Maars sees us out with Givin Up, a cheeky little lift of Mos Def’s massive hit Mathematics over the top of a personal favourite of mine, New Orleans Funk legend Lee Dorsey’s Give it Up, then add some extra bongos. Nice

Available now from junodownload.

And as an extra-bonus-doubleplusgood feature, here’s the video for the Allergies tune below!

Ahoy kids, I’m back!

Apologies about the lack of a ToT last week – sadly had to spend 8-9hrs driving to and from visiting a very ill relative and really *really* wasn’t in the right headspace to write anything.

That’s not happened this week though, so we’re back with the beat (and rhymes – yes – it’s a bit hip-hop heavy this week …)

Onwards!

I’ve been in one of those cheerful summer moods this week, largely due to a weekend camping in the Isle of Purbeck for the tenth anniversary  of Chilled Cider fuelled by Hecks Kingston Black Scrumpy (thanks Mr Heap) Cuban Cigars (thanks bruv) and some excellent music at the Square and Compass courtesy of Pete Lawrence, with the highlight being The Destroyers, who you should definitely go and see if they end up near you.

Headline props this week must go to Hidden Riddim for bringing the first couple of tracks to my attention – bigs ups sir!

Onwards!

3, 2, 1, you’re back in the room …

Apologies for the lack of a ToT last week, I was in Toyko on my hols and was suffering from a dearth of wi-fi access – or at least reasonably priced wi-fi access – I wasn’t going to pay the £20 a day the hotel wanted to charge me – I blame my Scottish heritage for the ‘deep pockets & short arms’ nature of this excuse

Never fear though, normal service has been returned, and to make up for the emotional trauma of missing a week, I’ve dropped a double dose of tunes on you below …

I know, I know – I missed one. As in ‘totally missed’ rather than ‘was a day late’. The only excuse I have is that I managed to leave my laptop charger was in the Midlands, whilst my laptop was in Bristol, with the two only being reunited on New Years Eve which to be honest was when I was more interested in attempting to drink my own bodyweight in booze. I succeeded in this mission so well, that the next couple of days were a bit ropey and low an behold a week was missed

Sorry.

Well, now the grovelling is over let’s get involved shall we?

Yes, ok, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. It’s only the second Thursday I’ve missed in six months – largely down to a week of 12hr days stuck in a hotel in the arse end of Paris with no wifi. Whoever said business travel was cool …

Right enough whinging, on with the show.

Thanks to those of you who came down to Timbuk2 on Friday – good news is they loved it and I’m back giving it some red-hot room 2 action on the 12th August whilst Nebula bosh out the DnB in the main room. Excellent.

If you can’t wait that long before a slice of Sherlock, I’m playing the upstairs bar on Big Chill Bristol with the man like Powercut from Funk from the Trunk

Onwards to the tunes!
