And just in time for Glasto as well, which to be fair descends into a Somme-like mire of cowshit and mud, complete with Trenchfoot and dodgy-food-van-related dysentery pretty much every other year.
First camping session of the year done, followed by kids birthday parties and other craziness – I’m glad I’m back to listening to tunes tbh, it’s a lot less hectic!
If you like what I do here, then catch me playing at For The Love of Music over in Gloucester in July – many of the tunes I’ve pimped will no doubt be played there.
Ah, it’s time to relax. You know what that means. A glass of wine, your favourite easy chair, And of course, three tracks, on time for once, from your favourite beardy Bristol bloke. (Noooo, I’ve not been listening to The Offspring and reliving my youth whilst drinking wine. Much) Continue reading
Went to see good buddies of the blog, The Allergies, at their triumphant live gig at Bristol’s Colston Hall last Friday – an epic time was had by all, and afterwards, there was a proper spotter-fest at Cosies, with all sorts of oddities and rarities being spun by DJ Format, aided and abetted by local vinyl pusher and fount of all things record related, John Stapleton. Some of these may, let’s face it, will, feature below.
Its rare when I’m at a gig and can’t recognise 50% of the tunes being played, or at least which samples the track is using, but the DJ Format set had me foxed, and was one of the best selected sets of eclectic beats and breaks I’ve heard in a very long time.
Sometimes, digging up 3 tracks for you lot to feast your ears on is hard work – ploughing through screeds of derivative stale takes on the same old samples, dodging PRs who insist I’m going to love their latest alt-country star (I won’t), and avoiding EDM can chafe a touch.
Compared to normal, this week’s been pretty easy. My tune-radar was finely honed and the following 3 stunners pretty much dropped into my lap this week. Result!
Another week and three more tunes for your lugholes. Quick Bristol gig tip if you’re about tomorrow night – Jimi Needles with his band at The Lanes – gwaaaan, it’ll be good!
Last week was a bit of an odd one. Started digging for tunes … and was generally uninspired. Not sure if it was me, a lack of digging, or just a poor week for releases, but nothing jumped out and slapped me, made me think “yeah, YEAH, this is killer!”.
Anyway the upshot was I didn’t post anything – don’t want to let the standards drop do we?
Ok, I’ll admit it, in a haze of cheese, turkey and Quality Street, I forgot what day, hell, what week it even was it was, hence the non-emergence of anything on the blog from me, since before Christmas.
Ooops – best rectify that now.
(Oh, and many thanks for The Canteen and the thoroughly goofy and highly talents Mustard Brass Band for having me play on the 23rd – check those guys and gals out, especially if you like barefoot breakdancing tuba players, as pictured above)
